DID YOU KNOW --that there are anywhere from 3000- 6000 children in different degrees of homelessness in the Albuquerque area? The homeless definition describes children who are in temporary or no housing -- temporary means those living in cars, motels, sleeping on a friend's sofa, in a shelter, in a tent near the river, etc. No housing refers to children living on the street. At SOTV, through our Mission Committee/Ministry, we support the following organizations that directly help homeless children:
- We donate money to APS Title 1 Homeless Project -- this group directly addresses the homeless kids in APS by providing clothing, supplies, family aid, a liaison to social services and evening/after-school programs.
- We donate money to Cuidando Los Ninos -- which serves as preschool/daycare for homeless kids.
- We donate money to Peanut Butter & Jelly Family Services -- a therapeutic preschool in the South Valley, the International District and Bernalillo County. This program helps to reunite families, teach parenting skills, provide preschool & meals to many.
- We support Project Share, the Rio Grande Food Project, and The Storehouse -- which are food pantries and soup kitchens.
- The Storehouse boxes in front of the Preschool provide a way of donating good used clothing especially now that winter is near and warm coats and clothing are in need. The Storehouse is not a thrift store, all the items donated are given away to those who are needy.
God continues to work through our church to provide help and support to the community where we live.
