Hunger

Project Share

The cooperative hands of many church members help to provide a full Sunday dinner to approximately 150 homeless people of Albuquerque who come to Project Share. Our ongoing commitment has been to provide this meal on the first Sunday of March, June, September, and December.

Rio Grande Food Project (RGFP)

The Rio Grande Food Project is dedicated to providing emergency food relief to hungry individuals and families throughout the Albuquerque metro area. Persons in need are given a week’s worth of food for the entire household. SOTV collects peanut butter and jelly for RGFP during communion. This year SOTV also sponsored a Thanksgiving in July to help stock their shelves during a time of year that may be a bit leaner for them. Also this year, the mission committee partnered with the shepherd groups to run the food pantry every 3rd Saturday of the month.

Along the Peanut Butter Trail

Written by Mission
Where are all those jars of peanut butter (donated monthly by members of Shepherd of the Valley) going? They are going to the same place a growing number of SOTV volunteers are going, according to Bill Snead, SOTV mission elder. The place is the Rio Grande Food Project, also known as the Rio Grande Food Pantry. It is located at Rio Grande Presbyterian Church, 600 Coors NW, about a mile south of the Interstate 40 and Coors interchange. In 2010, pantry workers, including the SOTV volunteers, handed out over 375,000 pounds of food to over 25,000 people. A growing number…

The Frozen Chosen

Written by Garden
February 20 marked the first official SOTV Garden workday of the 2012 growing season. Weed block and gravel was laid in the paths and the pre-school fence railroad ties were recycled for fruit tree borders. The cold weather simply made us more efficient! Thanks to Gerry, Frank, Dick, Tim, Wess, Billy, Lindsay, Karl, Kimberly, Gwen, Lorrie, Ryan, Trenten and Lara!

Garden Summary for 2011

Written by Garden
Our total donation of fresh, organic produce to Rio Grande Food Pantry was 137 pounds for 2011! A HUGE “Thank You!!” to the many helpers throughout the 2011 growing season. It would have been difficult to do it all without each of you. As of the December Chimes deadline, we have a Thanksgiving weekend work date set, with prayers that weather will be cooperative. The plan is to do another layer of mulch with horse manure and straw. This will be a tremendous help for our spring planting!

Thanks for Thanksgiving Basket Generosity

Written by Deacons
JOYS AND PRAISES -- a big thanks from the Deacons to all the generous members of the SOTV congregation for your kind donations of food for the Thanksgiving baskets. There was an abundance of food given, which means 12 needy families associated with the Martineztown House of Neighborly Service will have a nourishing, and hearty Thanksgiving meal.

Garden Update and Thanks

Written by Garden
“Thank you!” to the following youth and our interns, Ginny Kotz, Laura Atencio, Shelton Caldwell, Courtney Romero and Brent Gillespie who were amazing help at the garden on Sunday, October 9. They took time from their busy schedules to help to harvest produce, pull weeds and spread fresh wood chips -- they are awesome! As of Chimes deadline, our garden has donated 116 pounds of fresh, organic produce to the Rio Grande Food Project. With cooler weather coming on, we are wrapping up our harvesting. Don’t think that cooler weather means nothing is happening in the garden! As the temperatures…

700 Pounds

Written by Hunger
700 Pounds! - That’s how much food was donated to the Rio Grande Food Project for Thanksgiving in July. It took two vehicles and many, many hands to deliver the food. They were overjoyed with the donation! Join your shepherd group on the 3rd Saturday of the month at RGFP to give out food to those in need. Your three hours will be well spent. For more information on how to volunteer, contact Gwen Petty.

Saturdays at RGFP

Written by Hunger
Saturday at RGFP - If you ever want to witness first hand where all that peanut butter goes, join your Shepherd Group for a Saturday at the Rio Grande Food Project. Located behind Rio Grande Presbyterian Church, this food pantry is one of the largest in the state. The work is simple – bag food for those in need – and it is extremely rewarding.
