Join us during the Sunday School hour for the next few months as we continue to study and grow in God’s Word. All are welcome. The next few months will include the following.
The Feasting on the Word Adult Christian Growth curriculum provides an amazing guide for your spiritual journey. All supplies are provided. Come Join the Feast every Sunday at 9:45 in the Fellowship Hall! Members interested in leading Adult Christian Growth classes should be on the lookout for notice of the next teacher training session.

ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION -- every Sunday at 9:45 am. A new curriculum, Feasting on the Word has been selected. Classes will include looking at the lectionary, having good discussions, teaching, and sharing. Teachers have been trained to be accepting of diverse thinking and trained to elicit discussion from participants. Sounds great! Join the class in the Fellowship Hall.
JOIN US FOR ADULT CHRISTIAN GROWTH - Sunday’s Adult Christian Growth lesson from Feasting on the Word focuses on Mark 9:2-9
, the familiar account of Jesus’ Transfiguration on the mountain. Participants will reflect on the potential of Jesus’ transcendence to both frighten and comfort, and explore the transfiguration as affirming Jesus’ mission and call to follow the way of the cross. Led by Dorothy Wilkinson, the class meets at 9:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall.
Sharon Olguin, who has had a career of teaching teachers to teach, and Wayne Ciddio, resident expert on the new Presbyterian Curriculum, taught a class to adult education teachers. Sixteen adults came to the class and have agreed to begin teaching. This will give us a wonderful variety of adult teachers. A make-up teacher training will be held soon. Contact Wayne Ciddio or Kathy Rhoades if you are interested in participating.
Don’t leave at HALF TIME – Don’t miss the second half at Shepherd of the Valley!
What is HALF TIME? Are we going to start playing football?
Well, HALF TIME is what happens between the first service and Christian Education OR what happens between Christian Education and the second service every Sunday morning. "Wow! I never thought about it like that! So I need to go to BOTH Christian Education AND Worship so I get the full Sunday schedule."
Teacher dedication will be held during the services on September 18 and it will also be Super Sign Up Sunday for Christian Education--with no regular CE classes scheduled. Regular fall Christian Education classes begin on SEPTEMBER 25. Don’t forget there are classes for ALL AGES! Make this the year you plan to be at Shepherd of the Valley for the FULL schedule. Both Christian Education AND Worship! See you there! Go…o…o...o…CHRISTIANS!

In this final season of the church year, we are living in "Ordinary Time," which some traditions call the "Season After Pentecost." During this period, we begin the church's program year, but we do not celebrate major feasts, festive dates, or occasions. It is a period rich in opportunities for study and learning, and the new "Feasting on the Word" Adult Christian Growth curriculum provides those opportunities.
The Bible passages for study during this season focus most directly on the Gospel of Matthew. These passages are appropriate to the church's life since they center on who Jesus is and how we live as his disciples. These two dimensions go together. Theologically, as Christians our discipleship as followers of Jesus Christ is based on who Jesus is, as the One to whom we give our love and entrust our lives. Jesus's parables in Matthew point to his authority as the One who comes from God. He draws us into living as God's people and serving God's purposes in the world. The Bible readings for this season include the greatest commandment of all; that we love God with all that is in us and love our neighbors as ourselves.
Come "Join the Feast" each Sunday at 9:45 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall as we explore the day's most important Scripture passage in an exciting new curriculum that combines lecture, small group discussions, and activities as we discern as a congregation what is important to know in each passage, where God is in words of Scripture, what his words mean for our lives, and what we are being called to do in response.
